The sidewalks were also changed. Granite curbstones were replaced by cement. A strip of red concrete blocks replaced part of the black and white mosaic stones. The idea was creating an express lane for people, leaving just a narrow strip of stones near the stores for those who are window shopping at a slower speed. |

Crossing Visconde de Pirajá is a colorful experience. Cariocas are not the most disciplined drivers in the world. To encourage people to respect the black and white stripes, bold red and blue stripes were painted on the asphalt. Believe it or not, the gimmick worked.
