This is view from across
the street of impressive Candelária Church. The parish
was founded in 1634. One of the prettiest features of
this Neoclassical masterpiece is the beautiful limestone
dome, imported from Portugal. Do not miss details in
marble and cast iron, beautiful stained windows, and 6
large panels portraying the origins of the church. |

Cinelândia is one of the most
vibrant squares in the Downtown area. It is surrounded by
the Museum of Fine Arts, the Municipal Library, and the
Municipal Theater. Take a seat, and spend a few minutes
people-watching before you go on. |
There are so many beautiful statues
and monuments in Rio, that we wonder if anyone keeps
track of them all! This is a city in constant renovation,
and even fountains and monuments are sometimes transported to new locations. |

The harmony of contrasts is one of
the biggest charms of Downtown Rio. An XVI century
monastery may be next to a building that clearly belongs
to the XXI century. |
|
Contemporary Downtown includes a number of
interesting buildings. The
Rubik's-cube-with-some-pieces-missing tower of Petrobrás
is one of the most impressive. |
