Copacabana Beach is where residents and visitors from all over the world have a chance to mingle. You will see families with small children, elderly citizens, the young and beautiful, rich and poor sharing the same beach strip. |
The sand
bank is narrower at both ends of the
beach, and some spots in the center are
very wide. There are beach kiosks every
50 yards or so. Stop whenever you want
for a beer, coconut, or even a quick
snack. There is even a gay kiosk (near
Copacabana Palace) where the owners
frequently tend bar in drag. Rio
welcomes people of all persuasions. |

Now that you
got your strenght back after a quick
pit stop what about a match of beach
volleyball? If you are not the active
kind you can always stop and watch.
Locals also engage in matches of futevoley where you are not allowed to touch the
ball with your hands. Seeing is
believing. |
Copacabana Beach offers a bit more than sand and
sports-oriented activities. All you have
to do is cross the street to explore the
cafes, restaurants and nightclubs. Some
of them are legendary, like Help Disco in
Posto 5 and Boite Holiday - the only
go-go bar in Rio with an ocean view. And
then there are travel agencies, jewelers,
car rental agencies, and excellent
hotels. Take a day or two to explore all
possibilities. |
